30 Days of Buffy- Day Seven

Day 7: Least Favorite Male Character

It would be easy to name either Spike or Angel here. Very easy. In fact, I heavily considered it and that’s why there’s such a large gap between day six and day seven. And while I hate Angel far more than I hate Spike (Spike’s friendship with Joyce nearly redeems him for me), I couldn’t go for the easy answer. In a show about killing vampires, romanticizing two of the vampires (three if you count Dracula a little bit) just pisses me off.

Okay, Bachelor #1, I like long moonlit walks in cemeteries and if you do, too, I don't care that you're a killer by nature. Oh, Bachelor #2, you too? Well, there's plenty of love to go around.

You know what? Frak that. I hate Angel. Stupid, stupid Angel. I didn’t watch his stupid spin-off, I was annoyed throughout season 2 when he was the Big Bad, and every single reappearance of him throughout the series was just annoying. Except in the season 3 episode (remember, season 3 is my favorite) The Wish, where Cordelia wishes for a world without Buffy. Then super hot sadist Willow tortures him like crazy in a dungeon, treating him like the dog he is. Sidenote: that episode also introduced Anya, who would have been my favorite character had it not been for Faith.

Why do I hate Angel so much? It’s not just that I don’t understand why Buffy, a VAMPIRE SLAYER, would fall in love with him. He is needlessly vague whenever he comes to assist her for any reason, he is all mopey about being gay a vampire with a soul, he and Spike are all stupid over crazy, crazy Drusilla and he acts like having a trench coat prevents anyone from thinking that he’s a pansy. I got news for you, Angel. NOBODY’S FOOLED.

Even I can tell you're a pansy, and I sparkle.

Supposedly he’s been alive forever, being a badass called Angelus, causing all kinds of ruckus with Spike and Drusilla. If that’s the case, why does having a soul make you less badass? Once he got cursed by the gypsies, he turned into this whiney, sobbing neutered vampire. With a soul, he should use his vampiric powers to be a super hero, not a skulking, trench-coated freak show.

Oh, and having sex with Buffy is the happiest you can possibly be and, as such, whenever you do you lose your soul and become a heartless killer? That thing that apparently happens. Really? Your kryptonite is having sex with the love of your eternal life? So, are you a metaphor for how lame people are when they’re not doing it? That is a terrible message! You are a Lifetime movie waiting to happen, Angel. GAH. You got your own show and Faith should have (I know it was talked about/offered/whatever and it fell through… just feel my pain, world. Don’t correct me).

I thought I would be safe from Angel in Buffy Season 8 because he was owned by a comic company that’s not Dark Horse but NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Now he stars in a comic WITH FAITH. IF I WANT FAITH ADVENTURES, I HAVE TO READ ABOUT ANGEL. ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!

When you're done with that, Faith, do me a favor and drown Angel. In holy water, of course. I know vampires don't breathe.

Meltdown ended. You can carry on with your lives.

30 Days of Buffy- Day Six

Day 6: Favorite Male Character

There are so many brilliant male characters in the Buffy-verse. I could go the obvious route and pick someone like Xander or Oz or even the way more obvious but far more disgusting route and choose Angel or Spike.  The former both have their qualities and the latter are vampires and, as such, deserving of a good staking, but there was one male character that really stood out for me. He came from my favorite season, three, and is perhaps one of the greatest villains in the history of the franchise: The Mayor of Sunnydale.

I'd vote for him.

The Mayor was just fun. He was despicable and likable at the same time. His ability to manipulate Faith and, in reality, all of the citizens of Sunnydale was just impressive but more than anything, I think the manipulation that transcended to genuine love for Faith was just beautiful. He was funny and evil and just clever. I don’t know that Joss Whedon has ever created such a compelling villain.

I wouldn't be so quick to check that one off, sir.

His finale was a little unexpected and I was a bit disappointed with how they wrapped up season 3 but the Mayor will always rank as favorite villain.

Second place goes to Nathan Fillion’s Caleb. Also a fantastic villain.

30 Days of Buffy- Day Five

Day 5: Least Favorite Female Character

"Hey, I'm just as surprised as you are that I'm still here."

This one is so easy, it’s almost not worth mentioning. Dawn Summers, Buffy’s annoying plot device sister arrived in season 5 because apparently the creators felt that by going back to Buffy’s roots as an angsty teenager (as opposed to the angsty college student/angsty college dropout that she had become) by tacking on a random angsty teenage sister that had until season 5 never been seen or spoken of.

I will give them credit for at least not pretending that she had really been there the whole time. Without giving anything away, I applaud their efforts to merge Dawn in by magical means and make it plausible (after all, this is Buffy the Vampire Slayer we’re talking about; magic is just part of the monster killing gig) but Dawn’s emotional shenanigans throughout season 5 just irked the hell out of me and, frankly, took away from the real heartbreak that occurred toward the middle of the season. I cared very little about how Dawn was going to react to the family trauma because she hadn’t been part of the family until this season! If this was a ploy to make Buffy have more responsibility suddenly, it certainly missed the mark considering how season 5 ended.

For the remaining two seasons of the show and throughout season 8 of the comic (I haven’t picked up any of the current issues of season 9 yet), Dawn continues to play the role of bratty younger sister to a level that effectively turns me off to the character entirely. If I wanted to watch a show about bratty teeangers, I’d watch anything on Disney or Nickelodeon. Dawn was a plot device that should have died at the end of season 5. I never got why the other characters cared about her once they found out her true origin, considering how easy it would have been to defeat that season’s Big Bad had they just thrown her off a building.

A Very Buffy Musical

I wrote this response to a Buffy musical article on my Tumblr account:

Buffy the Vampire SlayerCreator Joss Whedon Hopes to See the Show Sing on Broadway

Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon hopes to bring the popular TV series to Broadway someday. Whedon expressed interest in a Buffy musical several years ago and still hopes the project becomes a reality, according to DigitalSpy.com.

“I can’t say that I will, or that by the time I try to, anyone would want me to, but yeah, I think [Buffy] belongs [on Broadway],” Whedon said at Comic-Con on July 24 while discussing his upcoming superhero film, The Avengers.

Adapted from Whedon’s 1992 film of the same name, Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired from 1997 to 2003 and starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as the title hero. In 2001 Whedon wrote and directed a popular musical episode for the series’ sixth season, “Once More With Feeling.”

All right, so I’m a big Buffy fan. T-Shirts, Posters, Seasons on DVD, Season 8 in TPB, Motion Comic on iTunes, a tattoo planned… and I like “Once More With Feeling”, I really do. But, that being said, I think that the show wouldn’t hold up on Broadway without some major overhauling.

First, the music just doesn’t really hold up compared to anything else on Broadway. It just doesn’t. It’s simple, cheesy and, probably most importantly, not simply one story specific. Characters refer to other episodes and plots that aren’t central to “Once More With Feeling”. So while fans will be pumped about seeing it done professionally on the big stage with real Broadway actors performing the songs, I don’t think that anyone who hasn’t seen the show will get it. So on top of the music itself not being up to par, the story itself isn’t self-contained which will turn away a general audience.

I think a Buffy musical could draw an audience, with people clamoring more more vampire anything, so maybe it can create an interest with younger folks, tweens, those who wouldn’t necessarily be interested in a Broadway musical otherwise. Whedon would have to tell a completely separate story, though, one that doesn’t references seven seasons worth of history. He could place it at any point in Buffy canon, though, using whatever characters he’d want to. It would satisfy the long time fans to see a new story with their favorite, perhaps no longer existing characters and it would prevent confusion with new audiences.

Dr. Horrible’s Singalong Blog has proven that Whedon can put together a solid story, good music that can compete with other shows out there and create a cult classic that appeals to a wide variety of people. The right cast helped. People LOVE Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Nathan Fillion (Castle) and Felicia Day (The Guild, Dragon Age). So couple a team like what Whedon had with Dr. Horrible and another fantastic cast to reprise the roles of our favorite Scooby Gang, and he can create a smash hit.

After all, people pay for Spider-Man on Broadway and even Evil Dead had its shot. Who knows? With the right reconfiguration, geek might actually mix with musical theatre.

30 Days of Buffy- Day Four

Day 4: Favorite Female Character

You'll always be my slayer, Faith.

One of the reasons season 3 is my favorite is because it introduces Faith Lehane to the series. First, it’s Eliza Dushku. She first made it onto my radar with True Lies then in Bring it On. I didn’t catch Buffy until all seven seasons were already on DVD and I might not have even stayed on board with it had Faith not appeared. She was edgy and exciting and took slaying to a level that Buffy never could. Of course, she went down a darker path and has been trying to redeem herself ever since. She now stars in Angel & Faith, a monthly comic book produced by Dark Horse in a similar style to Buffy Seasons 8 and 9. Faith made slaying just seem fun, rather than the chore that Buffy perceived it as. And maybe it was the fun that Faith found in it that led her to becoming the “bad slayer” that she did but I always liked that about her: good and evil blurred for her and that made for compelling story-telling. Her returns to Sunnydale always meant for some crazy shenanigans.

30 Days of Buffy- Day Three

Day 3 – An Episode That Makes You Laugh/Happy.

He's so dreamy.

Buffy vs. Dracula. I. LOVE. DRACULA. He was a fantastic foil for Buffy and I love how Xander falls so easily under his sway

30 Days of Buffy- Day Two

Day 2 – Your Least Favorite Season.

The Cast of Season 2

There were some good times, particularly Spike and Drusilla moments, but it was the all Angel all the time show and my God do I hate Angel.

30 Days of Buffy- Day One

Day 1: Your Favorite Season.

The Cast of Season 3

For me, season 3 is the best. The Mayor is a fantastic villain, Faith was showcased into the series and Angel was on his way out the door. It also introduced The First Evil, which, of course, was the Big Bad of season 7. Oz and Willow were going strong, Xander and Cordelia were ending, and Buffy had real competition in the form of Faith. Just a fantastic season all around.
